By the early 1930s Ellington was breaking through racial
barriers to perform in theaters and hotels previously barred to blacks,
and would continue to break through barriers and categories the rest of
his career. He was making his first appearances in motion pictures and
was broadcasting frequently on radio, and by the time he left the Cotton
Club in February 1931, Ellington had joined Louis Armstrong as one of
the two foremost figures in jazz.
